Now it’s Time to Leave the Capsule if You Dare

About a month or so ago, I got a call from Dave.

“What are you doing the first weekend in February?” he asked.

“Nothing that I know of,” I said, though I guessed that was about to change.

“Want to go see the Space Shuttle launch?” Continue reading →

Do Not Feed Alligators

Spent all day travelling. Ended up in Orlando. Tired.

JoCo

As is the tradition for this time of year, I went to see Paul and Storm and Jonathan Coulton at Antone’s. Jonathan Coulton has become even more Jonathan Coultonier than last time.

I must get to bed. I have a plane to catch in the morning.

Every Day the Same Dream

Work has been really stressful the past few weeks. Every day it feels like I have survived a battle. My inbox has become a hydra of tasks. I cut one down and two more rise in its place.

This American Lab

I’ve been listening to Radio Lab and This American Life (available in podcast and radio flavors) and I’ve decided that they are the gold standard when measuring what a slice of life, short form documentary program ought to be. Beyond just superb sound design, the shows are edifying in a way that makes me feel better about the world in general. Also, if Ira Glass and Jad Abumrad interviewed each other, my mind would explode.

Smoke Monster

Current theory: the smoke monster/Esau is an alien stranded on earth either literally (he hails from beyond the stars), temporally (he comes from the future) or dimensionally (he is a secret man was not meant to know). When he says, “I want to go home,” he’s not talking about Hoboken.

Oh, and Sayid for Juliet is not a fair trade.

Stephen King Dream

The interesting other side of the bed dreams continue. Seems to be a lot more celebrity guest stars over there. In this one, Dave and I were hanging out with Stephen King. We were discussing a short story he wrote long ago. I couldn’t remember the name of it and neither could Stephen King because he had written so many of them. Then he had to go, but he let Dave and I peruse his computer game and board game collection, which was enviable.

Murder Truck Rally Dream

I’ve been sleeping on the other side of the bed lately and it has yielded some interesting dreams. This is one of them.

It was set in some desert town in New Mexico or Arizona. Somewhere that easily serves as the backdrop for post-apocalyptic films. I was hanging out with a bunch of hooligans, people I didn’t know in waking life. One of these friends persuaded me to drive a truck in the big monster truck rally the next day. I agreed. The rallies in this part of the world happened in football-size arenas and were gladiatorial duels which tested man and machine.

Nothing to See Here

Dorkness set on overdrive today. Got up and watched some shows then played some games. Didn’t feel up to socializing or getting anything productive done. Felt incapable of writing anything good. Sometimes one must retreat to their cave.

Mouse Guard

I finished the first two volumes of David Petersen’s Mouse Guard. Gorgeous art and fantastic storytelling. It was one of those stories where I was immediately drawn in and I instantly cared about the main characters. Petersen’s rich worldbuilding reminds me of when I first read Dinotopia. It seems so effortless, like he’s just chronicling the events of an actual place. Highly recommended.

If Luke Crane shows up to run the Mouse Guard RPG at PAX East, I got dibs on Saxon.
